His debut at the Olympic Games is the last chance to break free from a tough past, starting with the fact that Jimmer Fredette will be the first player in history to compete in the Olympic 3×3 after having also played in the NBA. Even he wouldn’t have believed it.

This discipline has made him rediscover the pleasure of working on himself after years of ups and downs, sudden fame, and unpleasant oblivion.

I rediscovered my competitive spirit. I knew I could improve myself

Starting from Brigham Young University in 2011 with high expectations, Fredette’s trajectory quickly faded over the years, with some stints in the NBA and two brief periods in China and the EuroLeague. In 2020, after leaving Panathinaikos following the outbreak of the pandemic, he contemplated the idea of retirement.

However, a phone call and the proposal from Team USA to form a 3×3 team put him on a different path. He didn’t refuse the call. He immediately said yes: he won the silver medal at the 2023 World Cup, the gold at the Pan American Championships, and also secured qualification for the Olympics.

On Jimmer Fredette’s calendar, August 5th is circled in red: the date of the final, the day he wants to imagine himself with the gold medal around his neck. The opportunity he was waiting for has finally arrived.
