You may or may not have heard of Dikembe Mutombo. The ‘90s-era player came from childhood fame in his homeland of the DRC to enter Georgetown University. Both being a member of the Hoyas, as well as a dean’s list student, Mutombo was quickly drafted by the Denver Nuggets – and later several other teams – to play in the pros upon graduating.

Before starting his NBA career, Mutombo had already received a BA in linguistics in diplomacy and had enrolled in a medical program. He speaks nine languages fluently, and eventually went on to get a PhD. So he clearly got the body and the brains.

Chris Dudley

Chris Dudley is a player that doesn’t necessarily have the most stellar NBA record, but who does stand out in terms of his intellectual and professional capacity. Dudley graduated from Yale with degrees in political and economic sciences. He later went on to head an asset management firm and then a financial advisory firm.

Following his successful career in finance, Dudley decided to enter into politics. He became governor of Oregon in 2010. An extremely varied and impressive career he had.

Chris Bosh

Chris Bosh was a player with both a knack for the game, as well as creative and technical fields. Having been a star for the Miami Heat, when he completed his NBA career he decided to turn his attention to other fields.

Bosh had been a graphic design major at Georgia Tech, and now continues his career in ensign. He frequently publishes his work in Wired magazine.

Tom McMillen

If you’ve heard of Tom McMillen, it is probably because of his being a member of Congress. Indeed, following his time in the NBA, McMillen succeeded in becoming a member of the House of Representatives.

McMillen has managed to combine the various aspects of his multifaceted life in some very interesting ways. He was appointed chair of the President’s Sports, Fitness, and Sports Nutrition Foundation in 2011. And he has written widely on the relationship between sports and ethics.
