NBA Luxury Tax, what it is and how it works
What is and how does the NBA Luxury Tax work, the Luxury Tax Line, and the Apron? The complete guide with all the details regarding this penalty.
In our Complete Guide to the NBA Market, we discussed the topic of the NBA Luxury Tax. In this article, we will go into more detail to understand exactly what it is and how it works.
What is the Luxury Tax?
The Luxury Tax is a very expensive fine imposed when teams exceed the Salary Cap for three consecutive seasons. The threshold beyond the cap is called the Luxury Tax Line, and it requires teams to pay a sum of money for every dollar they exceed the allowed limit.
For the 2024/25 season, the Salary Cap has been set at $140.588 million, with the Luxury Tax set at $170.814 million. Here’s the updated situation of NBA Team Salaries, team by team, with the gap between Salary Cap and Luxury Tax.
The money collected through this fine is then distributed to virtuous teams that have adhered to the Salary Cap limits.
How does the Luxury Tax work?
The general rule is to pay from $1.50 to $5 for every dollar that exceeds the Luxury Tax Line.
The exact amount of this tax depends on the excess and differs depending on whether the team is a repeat offender or not.

What is the Apron?
The Apron is an additional penalty imposed on a franchise when it exceeds the Luxury Tax Line by more than $4 million.
With the activation of the Apron, there are market operation restrictions imposed on the franchise, making it difficult to maneuver in terms of trades and balance its finances for future seasons.
Revenue Distribution
The total amount of the fine is split into two parts:
- Virtuous Teams: Half of the amount is allocated to franchises that have been diligent and have not exceeded the Salary Cap.
- League: The other half is kept by the NBA for what are called League purposes, which could include additional grants to virtuous teams.
In conclusion, it’s always best to be cautious about adhering to the league’s limits to avoid falling into a cycle of fines, payments, restrictions, and other penalties that can undermine a franchise’s future.
