Lakers Plan $162 Million, 3-Year Extension for LeBron James
Rumors say that the Lakers will renew LeBron James with a 3-year, $162 million contract at the start of Free Agency
The NBA market is starting to move even though there are still 5 days left until the beginning of Free Agency. Among the first rumors, the protagonists are the Los Angeles Lakers who, according to ESPN, will be willing to offer a three-year contract renewal to LeBron James for a total of $162 million.
Season | Age | Contract |
2024/25 | 39 years | 50 Million |
2025/26 | 40 years | 54 Million |
2026/27 | 41 years | 58.3 Million |
This is said to be a very lucrative extension. LeBron James, who will presumably decline his $51 million Player Option, will receive an average of about $53 million per year, becoming the highest-paid oldest player in the history of the league.
It’s a figure the Lakers need to consider carefully, but thanks to the Larry Bird Exception, it will have a lesser impact on the Salary Cap compared to the total value of the new contract.
If this happens, Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka will need to skillfully build a supporting cast worthy of the team, knowing that the only options are trades centered around players like D’Angelo Russell (who already seems to be far from LA) or Austin Reaves, who, however, seems to have already established a great relationship with the new head coach JJ Redick.
